Painting Trees and Hills Outdoors in Dalefield, New Zealand - Art and Painting Process Photos
Hello Steemers
I have been outside plein air painting (painting outdoors) and there are loads of great views to paint near to where I live.
I came across this view of a country dirt track with mountain in the background. I loved the colours of the foliage and the shadows cast by the trees, so I decided to paint this view.
Country Road, Otago, New Zealand, 8" x 10", oil on canvas panel, painted outdoors 'en plein air'.
This is the view I decided to paint, the whole area is a great location to paint in so I will probably come back here again soon.
I set up my pochade box easel which mounts on a camera tripod and got ready to start painting.
I sketch out the scene roughly with burnt umber and liquin which is a medium that improves the flow of the paint and speeds up the drying.
I start by painting the sky, then I immediately paint my dark tones and shadows as quickly as possible so that after it doesn't matter if the light changes.
The shadows in the distance must be lighter than the shadows in the foreground, otherwise they will come too far forward in the painting and the illusion of depth will be lost.
Next I paint the areas in light for the foliage and grass on the mountain. I desaturate the greens so it doesn't come forward in the painting.
You can desaturate a colour by adding its complementary opposite on the colour wheel. I increase the tone by adding titanium white to the mix.
Next I paint the trees in the foreground and I increase the saturation of my greens. I kick up the saturation by adding a little phthalo green to by blue and yellow mix, you can achieve some tasty greens with this colour.
I complete the painting by adding in suggestions of branches in the trees and fence posts by the side of the road.
I add my lightest tones to the painting by sharpening up the clouds and adding highlights in the trees to give the appearance of them being in bright sunlight.
This is my finished painting.
I hope you enjoyed my blog post.

You just seem to make it look so easy! ;) On an additional note, do you ever use an umbrella?
Right on. Nice balance with the large tree on the left.
