St. Martin's Island

A coral island located on the north-eastern side of the Bay of Bengal, south of the island of St Martin's Island. It is located about 9 kilometers south of Teknaf of Cox's Bazar district and 8 km west of Myanmar's coast at the mouth of the Naf river. Local coconut is also known as coconut ginger, because it is available in plenty of coconut.

It is not known when the first person identified this island. The first few Arab merchants named the island named Zinzira. Note that they used to rest on this island during the transit from southeast Asia to Chittagong. By the time Chittagong and the adjacent people knew this island as jinjira. In 1890, some Bengali and Rakhine people came to settle for this island. They were mainly fisheries.

As far as it is known, 13 families were settled as the first inhabitants. They chose the northernmost island. In time, this island turned into a Bengali-dominated area. Already on this island were Kea and Jhawgah. Perhaps the Bengali fishermen planted a lot of coconut trees on the island as a resort of water-soluble and fatigue eradication. In time, the entire island was once turned into a 'coconut tree' island.

In this form, local residents started calling the northern part of the island as coconut ginger In the year 1900, the British Geo group adopted this island as part of British India. Instead, they named Saint Martin after the name of Christian St. Martin. Then, gradually, to the people outside the region, the island became known as St. Martin.
