He possessed extraordinary artistic talent and creativity. He was also a visionary with respect to branding and marketing. By his savvy use of technology he reached the masses with his art, something no one before him had done. In the process he achieved international fame while still in his 20s. He was conscious of fashion, had a striking appearance, and was highly respected by his peers. Albrecht Dürer was a superstar, arguably the world's first.

Precocious

He was born on the 21st of May in 1471 in Nuremberg , Germany. His father was a prospering master goldsmith and Albrecht and his brothers were expected to follow the same path. The ability to draw accurately was an important skill for goldsmiths and even without training Albrecht exhibited remarkable innate ability. This is a self portrait, probably the earliest existing example by an established artist, which was done at age 13 with silver point, a medium which could not be corrected.

Er wurde am 21. Mai 1471 in Nürnberg geboren. Sein Vater war ein erfolgreicher Goldschmied und somit wurde von Albrecht und seinen Brüdern erwartet, dass sie den gleichen Weg folgen. Die Fähigkeit, genau zu zeichnen, war eine wichtiger Bestandteil für Goldschmiede. Sogar ohne Training zeigte Albrecht in dieser Hinsicht eine bemerkenswerte angeborene Fähigkeit. Das ist ein Selbstporträt (vermutlich das früheste vorhandene Beispiel eines etablierten Künstlers), dass er im Alter von 13 Jahren auf weiß grundiertem Papier mit Silberstift zeichnete. Nuremberg in 1500 was the place to be

The above map is Nuremberg a little over twenty year prior to Albrecht's birth. It was at the crossroads of Northern Europe, the unofficial capital of the Roman Empire, and the preeminent Germany city. At this time Munich was merely a small town of around 13,000 people.

Interesting Facts

• Prior to Dürer, successful artists needed to seek wealthy patrons to sponsor their artwork. Thus those works tended to be portraits of the patron & his family, or religious works for the church. Recognizing the power of the printing press, which had been invented by the goldsmith Gutenberg a few decades before Albrecht's birth, Dürer had woodcuts made of his sketches. This changed everything. Suddenly ordinary people could buy Albrecht's art for the price of a bread roll.
• No longer needing to please one wealthy sponsor, now he was also free to produce art that would appeal to the masses, which could be printed according to demand.
• The byproduct of this was that his reputation, influence, and fame spread as rapidly as his artwork. He was already famous as a young man.
• Albrecht recognized the importance of his brand, and came up with his iconic AD logo which could be found throughout Europe and eventually even India.
• Like modern day superstars, unscrupulous people had woodcuts made of his work, even with his own logo, and sold them as original. He went to court and won, but the ruling only forbade the copying of his logo.
• Unlike his Italian counterparts who guarded their trade secrets, he wrote and illustrated books explaining technique.

• Vor Dürer mussten sich erfolgreiche Künstler reiche Gönner suchen. So waren diese Werke meistens Porträts des Schirmherrn und seiner Familie, oder religiöse Werke für die Kirche. Albrecht erkannte die Macht der Druckmaschine, die von dem Goldschmied Gutenberg ein paar Jahrzehnte vor seiner Geburt erfunden wurde. Er ließ Holzschnitte aus seinen Skizzen machen, damit sie gedruckt werden konnten. Das hat alles verändert. Plötzlich konnten normale Leute Albrechts Kunst für den Preis eines Brötchens kaufen.
• Er brauchte nicht mehr einen wohlhabenden Sponsor zu gefallen. Plötzlich war er frei, Kunst zu produzieren, die die Massen ansprechen würde, die nach Bedarf gedruckt werden konnte.
• Das Nebenprodukt davon war, dass sich sein Ruf, sein Einfluss und sein Ruhm so schnell verbreiteten wie seine Kunstwerke. Er war dadurch schon als junger Mann berühmt.
• Albrecht erkannte die Bedeutung seiner Marke und erfand sein unverkennbares AD-Logo (Copyright), das in ganz Europa und schließlich sogar in Indien zu finden war.
• Ihm erging es aber auch wie modernen Superstars. Skrupellose Leute machten Holzschnitte von seiner Arbeit, und verkauften sie sogar mit seinem Logo als Originale. Er ging vor Gericht und gewann, aber das Urteil verbot nur das Kopieren seines Logos.
• Anders als seine künstlerischen Kollegen in Italien, die ihre Maltechnik streng geheim hielten, schrieb er illustrierte Bücher darüber, die seine Technik erklärten.
  
  Although he lived over 500 years ago, I can't think of another figure from the middle ages who looks like a thoroughly modern man. Doesn't he seem like someone you might see in a coffee shop?

Kidding aside, if I had to pick the three German artists I most admire, it would be (in no particular order): Johann S. Bach, Wolfgang von Goethe, and Albrecht Dürer. If you aren't familiar with him, or if it has been a while since you studied him, here is a very well done documentary from the BBC.

Wenn ich die drei deutschen Künstler, die ich am meisten bewundere, nennen sollte, wäre es (in keiner bestimmten Reihenfolge): Johann S. Bach, Wolfgang von Goethe und Albrecht Dürer. Falls du weiter Interesse hast.
