Creating Worlds Using Virtual Reality

in #art6 years ago (edited)

Yooooooo I’m back with more content!

This week I have a new painting of an alien octopus blob devouring a space station! I’ll be showing a timlapse of my process in Medium which is the software I use to sculpt and also some screenshots of my process in Photoshop. Please enjoy, ask a ton of questions and don’t forget to share this with all your art buddies.

So what’s going through my head when I design?? Most of the time I want to focus on is having fun. If I can do that making something cool and creative come along with it. The beauty of working digital is that I’m never stressed about making mistakes and with out fear I can be as wild as I want. When I’m having fun I do my best work.
I like to think about basic design principles like the rule of thirds or big medium and small shapes and how the interact with each other or just playing with form language. All the basics thrown together usually ends up being something interesting and fun for the eyes to look at.

Creating a background for this piece was essential for setting the environment and the depth of the piece. I wanted it to feel like it was out in space orbiting a planet of some sort. So I photobashed a bunch of images of earth together until it felt alien.

After getting the Bacground laid out I dropped my Medium sculpt into the scene and I began adding photo texture to it. I learned that laying down texture that speaks to the scale that I was trying to achieve was the best way to make the scale believeable.

At this stage I was starting to think about the little details, like something interesting for the eyes to Rest on. In this case I used some photos of lit up skyscrapers to push the scale even further and add to the ambiance.

During the final stage I noticed that I couldn’t really tell what was what and that it felt too abstract. So I added more photo reference to clarify the design. I used panel textures from space stations and frog skin textures to make the alien and ship seem more recognizable.
