Be wary the dreaded BLACK

Watch the above video first

Yes, keep that fiendish colour well away from your palette lest your mind take a Lovecraftian trip into insanity.

Seriously though it is far better to mix those darks yourself using a primary colour with it's secondary colour:
Red + green // blue + orange // yellow + purple.
Using a limited palette and mixing colours makes for a far more harmonious painting too.

You don't want to end up a fly trapped in a bottle of shadows!

unless you are aware of the rule aye hehe then we can break them eh?-
ultra marine and burnt umber make a fantastic black- good for shadows too -
the umber brings it forward and the blue pushes it back so you can play in and out. tc R

I'll have to try that, Rob. Been using only three colours - Ultramarine , yellow ochre & crimson red... But I've been wanting to add more colours and get more variety in my painting. Cheers for the advice.

you are most welcome - my mum taught me that when i was young shes also an artist
