Quick Sketches & Value Charts with Fifth Graders

in #art7 years ago

Sorry, Everyone!  I've been been missing from Steemit for about a month!  I keep getting busy with real life!

I have been continuing to do art with the 5th graders in my daughter's class.  They just finished a drawing project today - "Drawing a Guitar Three Ways".  It's awesome, and I want to tell you all about it.  But, to do that, I need to go back in time a few weeks and start with some of the art lessons that lead up to this project, because they all built upon each other.

So, to start with a few weeks ago, the students did some quick sketches of shells.  This was done by placing a different shell in front of each student, giving them 3 minutes to draw the shell (using pencil), and then each student passed their shell to the person next to them, repeat.

After having the students draw several shells, they were taught the difference between "line drawings", which is what they had been doing (usually) while drawing the shells, and a different way to approach drawing - by only using shading.  To practice with shading and to help them really know how dark & how light their pencils can go, we all did value charts.  I am a BIG FAN of value charts!

The students then created drawings of still lives of shells - by only using shading, rather than doing line drawings.  This is always a bit of a foreign idea to young artists.

I forgot to take any photos during this art lesson session, so you'll have to wait until my next post to see any of the students' artwork.  Stay tuned...
