Death and the Maiden and the Computer
Monitor and Skull, 2014, solarized petscii animation
Part of my work has focused on petscii conversions of images and displaying images on old computer monitors. I'm interested in the way computers act as objects within our space, within a still life. They are gateways into an imaginal space which is freighted with our desires. So as much as computers are invading our consciousnesses, in a cybernetic linkup we are also projecting our humanity into cyberspace. This is the realm where computer logic and human logic meet. Primarily I feel the technologicalization of the human psyche is the stronger force, but I also see the way imagery online reflects a dialectic of eros and thanatos, love and death, creation and entropy.
Monitor, Nude and Rose, oil on canvas, 90 x 70 cm, 2014
Computers steal our time and in this way they are angels of death. They also suggest limitless horizons and in this way they are sirens of an erotic transmachinism. In this sense the computer is naked. AI has not yet gained consciousness, but for us computers seem to contain some living element, there is something divine about their power.
Love the vibe. Working on similar stuff ( well thematic similar).
Have you seen Hyper Real?
