Gaudi’s art - an act of imitating nature
Have you ever thought of Gaudi’s work as an act of imitating natural forms and shapes? Or as a perfect compound of architecture and nature?
When we take a look at his work, we must ask ourselves who is the creator there – nature or himself?
Gaudi understood that the natural world is full of curved forms and shapes, not straight lines. He noticed that natural construction tends to favor sinewy materials. With this organic model in mind, Gaudi based his buildings on a following premise: If nature is the work of God, and if architectural forms are derived from nature, then the best way to honor God is to design buildings based on his work.
Gaudi is probably the best known for his masterpiece – the Sagrada Familia church. When it comes to his vision about Sagrada Familia, as a devout Catholic, his aim was to create the ultimate church.
- Geometry of snail shell as an inspiration to Sagrada Familia’s details
- Interior of Sagrada Familia imitates forest . The columns split like trees and the capitals resemble knots in trees
- The iron railing of Casa Vicens in Barcelona is based on the Mediterranean dwarf palm
- Flower as obvious inspiration to towers of the Sagrada Familia Cathedral
- Iron gate entrance to the lobby of Casa Milà in Barcelona as an association to the butterfly
