A small introduction to the history of Turkish painters
In this story I am going to show you some of the best works of Turkish painters in the last century. Let's start!
Hoca Ali Rıza (1858 – 1930) – Lakeside
Hoca Ali Riza is not the first painter to paint a landscape picture in Turkish painting but he is the first Turkish painter to come out of palace gardens and paint in the countryside and in the beach like an impressionist. He shows are his different styles with the attention to detail and the color diversity. There is a poetic style in the picture. As in this picture, all the landscape paintings have blue and green weights. He uses the figure as a dimension determiner in his drawings. Hoca Ali Riza has added a western style to his painting, though he has never been to Europe and has not seen impressionism.
Şeker Ahmet Paşa (1841 – 1907) – Pomegranates and Quinces
From the geometric point of view, the arrangement of quince and pomegranate is the most striking feature of the composition. Moreover, the realistic stance of the image is in harmony with the colors. The color diversty of Şeker Ahmet Pasha's paintings, the anxiety of giving birth to reality in the nature, brought him a style that we can call nature lyrical.
Osman Hamdi Bey (1842 – 1910) – The Tortoise Trainer
There are two different versions of the Turtle Tracer, 1906 and 1907. This is the 1906 version you see in this article. The main difference between the two versions is that there are 5 turtles in 1906 version and 6 turtles in 1907 version. This painting of Osman Hamdi Bey was interpreted as a tired state of an intellectual trying to modernize a backward society, especially when there was no clear knowledge of the source of inspiration.
