There is no precision when the construction of San Antonio Castle began, however there are documents that are a faithful witness that the construction process was during the second half of the seventeenth century.
It is located on the Pan de Azúcar hill, from where the city dominates and in turn you can see the blue waters of the Gulf of Cariaco and the Araya peninsula. It was the most important fortification that protected Cumaná, with a four-pointed star design, each of which points to a cardinal point.
The walls of this castle are up to 2 meters thick and has tunnels and passages that connect with the city. In this fortress was held prisoner, in his narrow cells and almost without lighting, General José Antonio Páez in 1851.
On the old colonial walls, a second ashlar masonry with its towers, battlements and other ornaments of military architecture was erected, this repair work was inaugurated on May 23, 1906. The earthquake of January 17, 1929, caused very serious damage to its old structure, already damaged by the earthquake of July 14, 1853. This earthquake ended up destroying the old house of straw and mud that served as the residence of the guard, located on the terrace.
The castle was the headquarters of the military institution until 1945 when the Antonio José de Sucre Barracks was built, now the residence of the armed force and the military command of the city. Currently it is a jewel that guards the city very jealously to provide it to its own and visitors. It was declared a National Historical Monumen, according to Official Gazette No. 27,876 dated October 29, 1965. It has tourist guides that tell the impressive history of this monument.
