Marlene Dumas is an artist of South African origin and her pictorial work has been characterized by investigating the problems of individual and collective identity, focusing on the representation of codes about sexuality, racial and religious issues. Dumas has specialized in portraying the human being from his fragility and spontaneity, capturing it from different stages of life. Through his painting he seeks to produce multiple expressive meanings regarding the cultural and social characteristics contained within his work, which is why in his work we will observe different discourses focused on critique using the body as a medium.

Marlene Dumas es una artista de origen Sudafricano y su trabajo pictórico se ha caracterizado por indagar en los problemas de identidad individual y colectiva, enfocado en la representación de los códigos acerca de la sexualidad, los temas raciales y de religión. Dumas se ha especializado por retratar el ser humano desde su fragilidad y espontaneidad plasmándolo desde distintas etapas de la vida. Por medio de su pintura busca producir múltiples significaciones expresivas en cuanto a las características culturales y sociales contenidas dentro de su obra, es por ello que en su trabajo observaremos distintos discursos enfocados hacia la crítica usando el cuerpo como medio.

Dumas works from material recorded in personal photographs and images extracted from magazines and newspapers, she does not make literary representations of these sources, but rather seeks to represent these characters stripped of their history, portraying them from their intimacy, leaving open the clear possibility of a discourse of criticism, identity or political.

Dumas trabaja a partir de material registrado en fotografías personales e imágenes extraídas de revistas y periódicos, ella no realiza representaciones literarias de dichas fuentes, sino más bien busca representar a estos personajes despojados de su historia, retratándolos desde su intimidad, dejando abierta la posibilidad tajante de un discurso de crítica, de identidad o político.

Most of his work is focused on representing bodies and faces with a certain ambiguity, as living entities between childhood and adulthood, but that in turn also seem to be dead, as we can appreciate in his work "Models" (1994), where we see the representation of multiple faces, very much like Dumas, with that connotation of being beings in uneasiness, and that ambiguity in terms of being a restless being.

La mayor parte de su trabajo está enfocada en representar a los cuerpos y rostros con cierta ambigüedad, como entes vivos entre la niñez y la adultez, pero que a su vez también parecieran estar muertos, como lo podemos apreciar en su obra “Models” (1994), donde vemos la representación de múltiples rostros, muy al estilo de Dumas, con esa connotación de ser seres en desasosiego, y esa ambigüedad en tanto a la edad de los personajes, muchos quizá seleccionados de su banco de imágenes referentes principales de sus trabajos a lo largo de su carrera.

Dumas has been able to express in a very coherent and faithful way to his plastic discourse the environment that surrounds him, as he appropriates these social elements and strong critiques and adapts them to his work from a very poetic point of view. The way in which she appropriates the body and represents it shows us the susceptibility of these individuals coupled with the feelings that the artist wants to express regarding the critique that is always present in her paintings, racial, sexual, political issues, contexts, identities, fears, etc.... Dumas ha sabido plasmar de una manera muy coherente y fiel a su discurso plástico el entorno que le rodea, como se apropia de estos elementos sociales y de criticas contundentes y los adapta a su obra desde una visión muy poética. La manera en como ella se apropia del cuerpo y lo representa nos demuestra la susceptibilidad de estos individuos aunado a esto los sentimientos que la artista quiere plasmar referente a la critica que esta siempre presente en sus pinturas, temas raciales, sexuales, políticos, contextos, identidades, miedos, etc. En fin les invito a buscar mas de la obra de esta gran artista que posee una carrera intachable y abnegada al ámbito artístico, social y cultural.
