Brrrrrrring, brrrrrrring... hello?

Today, I'm showing you the process of how I created 'Phone Call', an illustration for Chapter Seventeen of Doug Karr's fantastic novel Dwelling.

He would have been bored senseless if it wasn't for a tall woman sporting such a distinctive wash of bling and boobs, that he didn't quite know where to rest his eyes. She had the etched plastic receiver of an old pay phone pressed to her burnt sienna lips.

The process of creating 'Phone Call'

Before I started the drawing of the woman I prepared the paper with a series of marks using the black drawing ink. Once the ink had dried I sketched out the image of the woman and phone in pencil.

The outlines of the woman and details were added using a dip pen and drawing ink. Then layers of ink and water were added with a brush to create areas of tone.

The way she said the word pow was so violent, Dorian realized for the first time that he was staring. He averted his eyes, but it wasn't more than a second before he was creeping back up her camel colored UGGs to her ruffled tights again, resting for a moment where the metal phone chord brushed the chasm between her Rubenesque rack. He damned himself for not bringing along a sketchpad. He was getting good and stiff.

Dorian wasn't sure as he blinked in disbelief what surprised him more; the sight of someone talking into the relic of a pay phone in this age of techno-fetish, or the incriminating scraps of bile the crazed girl was spewing mid-precinct into the oversized receiver.

It's so strange looking at this image because it so perfectly evokes both the memory that inspired the character and what this moment has come to represent to Dorian in the chapter itself. Such a wonderfully evocative drawing!

Thanks @dougkarr. The image has a nice griminess to it- makes you want to disinfect that phone!

I love the sound of an old phone. For a long time, after we abondanded land lines, I used to use a service called magic jack that used your traditional phone on a computer. It was affordable and I had a special thing that allowed me to hook my vintage 1950's teal blue phone to it. When it rang, it was like the past was calling. However, it rarely rang as most people call mobile numbers and mostly people text of video chat today. It is a sound I love though.

I love the way you pushed the drawing into the mouth and the bottom of the hand piece, it speaks volumes.

That phone sounds awesome! I used to love the sound that the rotary dial telephone made as you entered the number. It probably took much longer to input a number, but phone numbers were shorter then. I've read you can get analogue to digital converters.

I still have the phone, but now it sits as decoration, a testament to the past, but I still like to look at it :)

I really like the way you did the lips. Nice graphic novel style :)

Those lips are very plump, between you and me I think she has had work done.

This looks really cool ! Inspiring even ! :-)
