Drawing for Dwelling - Dead Rat
Decaying vermin
I'm sharing with you some of the drawings I created for Chapter Twenty Three of Doug Karr's thrilling novel Dwelling. For this particular illustration I created two ink drawings of a baby rat in various states of decay, I gave these to @dougkarr and he combined the two image to create the dead rat image for Chapter Twenty Three of Dwelling.
He dipped his throbbing head. A small soiled envelope with the words 'HELLO' scrawled in pencil sat at his feet.

Creating an illustration for Dwelling
The first image
I created my first drawing using a dip pen and black drawing ink, and I painted the tones on the rat and envelope using water and ink. I used the edge of some card and ink to create the straight marks in the background.
I liked the facial features of this rat, but I wasn't sure if the rat was in a far enough state of decay to be the rat that Morris leaves as a little gift for Dorian.
The second image
Wanting to show more of the decaying carcass of the rat I went back to my drawing board and created a second image of a rat. In this ink drawing you can see more of the skeleton of the rat.
"Hello," he replied back to it as he ripped open the envelope. At first he couldn't see anything, so he pressed the sides in. Dorian let out a yell. The envelope dropped to the floor.

The final image
I sent both images to @dougkarr , he merged parts of my two illustrations together to create the image of the dead rat that we can see in Chapter Twenty Three of Dwelling. The head remains from the the first illustration, but we also have the rib-cage and text from the 2nd illustration.
A tiny decomposed face poked out from the torn sleeve. Dorian was dizzy, fighting the urge to puke all over his own front door as he kicked at the envelope and the minuscule skeleton of a dead rat slid out onto the welcome mat. A baby rat. No larger than a thumb.

You can read the 23rd chapter of Doug Karr's novel Dwelling now!

The fact that the rat is dead I imagine it has to do with the sequel to the novel? I would love to read it complete to understand the outcome, either way is a great job!
Yes you can read all about Morris's plan in Chapter 22 and Chapter 23 of @dougkarr's novel Dwelling.
You capture the essence of death just as beautifully as the essence of life! Poor little rat, just a pawn in a game between a pair of neighbors who hate each other. Another fantastic illustrative rendering!!!
My cat has given me plenty of live vermin studies over the years to take inspiration from.
Hmmm...........interesting.
I like the collaboration process of two of you! This half decomposed rat is very realistic IMHO.
Not the prettiest of images- but i'm happy with how it turned out.
Hey, @opheliafu this all art is simply amazing...thanks for sharing.....

hello @opheliafu, jajajaj I do not like rats but what I really like is your great work of art, it's a pleasure to find such beautiful drawings, your work looks subtle, clean, attractive. You handle your strokes very well giving the correct blur to achieve the effect of lights and shadows. May God continue to fill you with wisdom ..
