Blooming lovely!

Blue is one of my favourite colours in Hydrangeas. They are wonderful plants; their flowers seem to last from early summer through to autumn. I’m rather fond of the look of the flowers in autumn as the colours darken and the petals speckle, a future painting maybe?

‘Blue Hydrangeas’, a painting created with wax, oil pastel and watercolour.

I started drawing this picture using simple candle wax. I then built up layers of oil pastel and watercolours. The watercolours resist the wax and oil pastel. If you put down a layer of water first, then the watercolour will float on the surface. It creates this soft merging of colours when the water dries.
