The Three-Lobed Burning Eye
I am Robert Blake, but I see the tower in the dark. There is a monstrous odour... senses transfigured... boarding at that tower window cracking and giving way.... Iä... ngai... ygg.... I see it — coming here — hell-wind — titan blur — black wings — Yog-Sothoth save me — the three-lobed burning eye...

The Three-Lobed Burning Eye is an avatar of Nyarlathotep, one of his 1000 Masks. Part of the inspiration for this image, comes from Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu role-playing game, and in particular the adventure "Masks of Nyarlathotep". I was very fond of the game, had great fun as a cruel Keeper, always reminding my poor players their insignificance against the Great Old Ones. And if they dared to defy them, their demise was slow, bloody and torturous, involving many tentacles!
This is the cover of the classic adventure:

About the image: I started with a fractal made in JWildFire, and processed with GIMP afterwards. I gave much effort to embody that green glow in the picture and make it stand out, as I think it gives an eerie (and eldritch!) feeling to the image. Here is the original fractal, followed by some details of the original:
“ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn”
Haha yup, you beat me to it. All I can see are tentacles and R'lyeh
Well-said!
Jip, that does represent the insanity of the universe well. I wouldn't be surprised if the Warp in W40k was a copy of it. Your work could fit with both.
Thank you. I was familiar with Warhammer Fantasy, and the corruption induced by Chaos -- I guess the Warp is the equivalent in 40K? In years past, I had a large hardcover book named something like "CODEX: Chaos", detailing two of the chaos lords and I distinctly remember the amazing b&w artwork inside; alas, I've lost that tome, like some many other great books.
EDIT: I've found it: REALM OF CHAOS: The Lost and the Damned. Thanks, google!
Yeah, the Warp is the domain of Chaos, in a different dimension. 40k is pretty much the sci-fi version of old Warhammer Fantasy. Same gods, similar races but sci-fied. I guess its the Lovecraftian similarities that are what appeal to me about 40k.
Yes, I think that almost 100 years later, the Lovecraftian influence is evident in most modern fantasy/horror products. Even the most mainstream ones, like tv-series (Stranger Things), comics and video games. But these old classics, like the Warhammer games of the late 80's & early 90's have a special place in my heart, as that's what I grew up with.
