Easy Mini Art Contest #1: Strawberry... With a Twist???

Spot the strawberry?

Surprise! Most of it is in the milkshake! This is my entry for @jacinta.sevilla's Easy Mini Art Contest #1: To draw a strawberry.

I attempted making just a simple strawberry and decided it needed something extra, so I put a... twist... to it (get it, @jacinta.sevilla?).

(。☉౪ ⊙。) hehehehe

I like the way strawberries look when cut in half, with the white part contrasting against the red. So I decided to draw a strawberry milkshake with half a strawberry wedged into the lip of the glass, for added fanciness.

Also, this picture was much much bigger in the original canvass, as I initially intended to draw a much bigger scene. Here's the full view. I thought it looked kinda nice. I may expand this drawing in the future. Hmmmm.

Process:

Start with 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries, 1 cup of milk... Oh wait, wrong process. Ahem

I used ArtRage to make this piece and used...

  • Paint Roller
  • Ink Pen
  • Watercolor brush

I just made a splash of grey background with the paint roller and used the ink pen in black to make the outline. I then used the watercolor brush to fill in all the colors.

You can see I ditched the bar - too much work and I can't make straight lines (-_\) sniff

New Discovery!

Layer Image 3.JPG

I figured out that by using the layer feature, you can easily erase the guide lines made with the pen, without affecting the layers of color above the layer you are working on. So if the rough sketch is in layer 1 and the colors are in layer 2, you can go back to layer 1 and erase the lines without affecting the colors at all. Haha. I'm such a noob.

Finally...

Meet Roxy, she's a regular at the Corner Diner, where they whip up the best milkshake in town! The staff always pick the freshest and sweetest strawberry to put in her glass.

I used about 4-5 layers of watercolor to get the saturation I wanted. I added some final details using the ink pen and I think it all came together nicely when I put in white highlights with the airbrush at the very end.

Hope you like it and give it some love!
