Inktober FF9:So, which version is good?

in #art7 years ago

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. If you're one of my followers and you're reading this, then I commend you for staying loyal to me. Long story short Steemians, I've been away from this platform due to spending 50% of my time drawing and the other half gaming. But, I will entertain you in admitting that I'm spending this month doing Inktober for the very first time. So, without further ado, let's delve into my art piece...

This drawing is fanart of Zidane Tribal, from the renowned game: Final Fantasy 9.
I've been enamored with it ever since I received it as a birthday gift months ago(It's the PS1 version to be precise). Before you witness the two colored versions of this piece, I want to divulge my opinion on the ink stage of my drawing. To begin, I intended the ink lines to be different in all aspects of my sketch, thin in some areas, thicker in others. I always preferred to use this inking style sometimes. Anyway, to my bewilderment, I didn't notice the anatomical mistakes until after I have inked my sketch. For starters, Zidane's shoulders and deltoids(shoulder muscles) are misaligned in the head portrait. Second, in the full body shot, Zidane's shoulders are too wide, his left hand looks awkward, and his right deltoid muscle, looks unnatural. It just goes to show you, that I really need to be more attentive after drawing in pencil, go back to the drawing board and relearn and practice human anatomy. On a different argument, the art style is manga but, in my opinion, it's a basic manga style. As an anime & manga fan, I've noticed intricate and even borderline realistic styles within the mediums, so this piece reflects my need to to create my own style. Moving on, there are some positives, which are the inking and the composition. So, at least this drawing is pretty good, yet flawed.

Subsequently, this is one version of my fanart that is colored traditionally. I was tired of coloring digitally and I wanted to take a break from using messy mediums like watercolors or chalk pastels. Me, being the poor artist that I am, does not possess Copic markers, so I had to make do with what I have:Crayola markers and old, but usable neon highlighters. I have to admit, I managed to combine new colors with the bright, pastel markers and the highlighters. For example, I don't have an orange marker, so I combined hot pink and laser yellow to use as shading in Zidane's hair. Also, it's due to that fact that I was able to give Zidane the blue-green hue thanks to mixing blue lagoon, lime green, battery-charged blue(darker) and sea green(literal names of the Crayola Markers). On another note, I manged to fix some of the aforementioned mistakes by dabbing witch hazel on the ink to "erase" them(which leaves a rough area), but regrettably, I misaligned Zidane's deltoids, again. Positively, I utilized the same method to lighten up the colors and emphasized lighter areas. When it comes to the color balance, it was just improvised. However, as time went on, I continued to build on it. Coincidentally, Zidane's upper half comprises of warm colors with a small amount of a cool color(his blue eyes) and the lower half of mostly cool colors with some warm colors(his shoes and belt). I was aiming to color Zidane to match his in-game counterpart, but I ended up slightly subverting it and it came out magnificently.
20171016_201009.jpgFun Fact: I had to take a picture of my art piece in the bathroom, since it was the only room with a white light.

Loooong before I colored my artwork with markers and highlighters, I scanned it and used Manga Studio Debut 4 to finish it. This time, the colors would initially be Zidane's accurate ones, but I decided to use complementary colors in the shading. The process was successful and I personally loved it. Thankfully, I manged to resize, and redraw some of the anatomical mistakes, so that was fortuitous of me.

Just for the sake of it , I'll include a scanned version of my marker-colored fanart. Apparently, my scanner hates Crayola warm colors and neon highlighters. I couldn't find a way to change the brightness or contrast, so that 's the reason why I had to take a a picture. In transition, for any FF9 fan that points out Zidane's missing gun, just think to yourself, "he never shoots it once," so why bother drawing it. Ok, ok, tl;dr: I realized I forgot to draw Zidane's gun when it was too late.
