Hidden treasure of the city – Lanu Park

29.jpg

On a little hill, just on the edges of the city center of Lahti near the harbor lies the Lanu Park. The park holds 12 statues from Olavi Lanu(1925-2015), who was Finnish sculptor known for his large works made of construction materials like wood, concrete and copper imitating surfaces from nature like willow branches, moss or bark. Lanu got international renown from his works in the Venice Biennale in 1978 where natural materials were used. The park was built between 1988-and 1992 with assistance of students from Lahti Institute of Fine Arts. The works in the park are mimicking natural stone colors are intended to merge into the nature and gather moss freely.

Entrance to the park does not quite reveal what is to be expected

I never got to meet Lanu in person but he was a mentor to many of my teachers at the former Lahti institute of Fine Arts and often employed them for his projects - like some do for my peers these days. When i was in the park I got a certain feeling of tradition and it is as if sometimes there is a little sense in this city . Besides the sculptures in the park the surrounding area has an arboretum with 41 species of trees and wide variety of plants to wonder. It is quie beautiful place. I actually intended to make this last year to get the autumn colors but i didn't quite make it then. I hope you enjoy this visit to the world of sculptures by Olavi Lanu.

WOW :) With all the pictures you have, it looks and sounds that you had a lot of fun there, also very educational experiences that you must of had. Thank you for sharing :)

Thank you , it was very inspirational walk

Inspriations come in many forms and ways. It is a good idea to keep your eyes, and brain open to them. :)

wooow what an inspiring place! I'm sharing this one!

Truly is, thank you @ankapolo

I've never know Olavi Lanu before to read your content, but I have to say that these sculpure are magnificent! I love how they work in the nature, they look like a natural element there, so touching!

Yes. there is some his work in Spazi d'arte, Fattoria di Celle, Pistoia, i don't know if it's nearby you, But looks like a nice place.

Dear @mikkolyytinen , I live in Pistoia!!!! ^_^ So lucky to be here, I've never been in the Fattoria di Celle (I saw many of the little art pieces that Fattoria give sometimes to the Museum Fabroni in the center of Pistoia) , but my husband was there many time because he knows the owner (a great collector of art). I'll visit it sooner, I know it's really wonderful!

Oh, what a wonderful coincidence :) I thought the area name sounded familiar. I would love to visit there sometimes it seems such an amazing collection. Lucky you :)

Oh so beautiful. I adore these moss covered sculptures, thank you for sharing these amazing pieces.

My pleasure, this place deserves more attention.

This is an absolutely fantastic collection! Very nicely done!

Thank you, it is amazing to have such spot here

Yes, they are quite wonderful

Wow, this looks really good. It's a shame most locations like this stay "hidden" from quite many people, as they are just not interested in things like these.

Or they could be, but they think "Nah I guess it would be boring" and never check anything out.

Yeah, it really is. This is such a exquisite thing to have. But even a simple art gallery in the city center has tall treshold for random visitor though many are curious.
