Walks around Saint-Petersburg#23.
Near the "New Holland" is the Theater Square, the main architectural structure of which is the State Academic Mariinsky Theater - the St. Petersburg Opera and Ballet Theater, the leading theater in Russia and in the world.
In 1783, by order of the Empress Catherine the Great, the Bolshoi Theater was built in this building, which was rebuilt under the present St. Petersburg Conservatory. It was called the Great Stone Theater on the Carousel Square. Later, the square was renamed Teatralnaya.
In 1859, the Circus burned down, which was built by the architect Albert Kavos in 1847 - 1848 in front of the Bolshoi Theater. Therefore, the architect was instructed to build a new theater structure on the site of the burnt down building. It was beautifully done and in 1860 a new theater was opened, named Mariinsky in honor of the wife of Emperor Alexander II, called Maria Alexandrovna.
In 1883 - 1886 the building was rebuilt by architect Victor Schreter. The course of the reconstruction was observed by the great Russian architect Nikolai Benois. After perestroika, all the ballet performances were held at the Mariinsky Theater. The building of the Bolshoi Kamenny Theater was given to the St. Petersburg Conservatory and in 1896 it was rebuilt by the architect Vladimir Nicolya.
We met two more beautiful buildings of St. Petersburg, which are also the greatest monuments-constructions of world theater and stage art.
I wait for you again on walks in St. Petersburg.
