New oil painting in the making - Process and thoughts.

Good Saturday fine people!

Today I started another rather spontanious painting of a couple of my peacock amaryllis flowers.

Oil on panel, size 20 x 30 cm

I was initially not going to do any more oil paintings before going home before Christmas as it usually takes a few days from start to finish and I have a bunch of other tings to take care of before my travels. But! What can you do when inspiration hits you?

I also have to leave my flowers behind and couldn't come to terms with the fact that I just got ONE little painting out of them so far. So there you go, hehe..

I was actually also out of panels, but I found an old painting that I realized I would never finish and sanded the panel down, E voila! A new panel was born.

That is one of my favorite things about working on panels, they are quite solid, sterdy things that can be re-used much easier than a canvas.

Today I also snapped a few process photos;

One thing I have learned after painting a couple of florals is that the clever thing to do is paint one flower at the time.
In my previous paintings I was jumping back and forth between the flowers, kind of trying to paint them all at the same time.

When doing this the flowers change so much that when you continue the next day you have to change them all if you haven't finished painting them, instead of only changing one. Or, even better, you can start from scratch on the ones you still need to paint and dodge any big changes all together!

I also learned that flowers die ( I kind of knew that one allready..) and that they should be the main priority. Vases and other static objects can be painted later and will still be the same.

In my previous florals I used to spend precious flower-painting time on vases and backgrounds, NOT very clever.

All in all I feel like I have learned a lot from my first floral painting a couple of weeks back. I also feel like I've re-discovered my love for oilpainting and that painting flowers lets me go about form in a more brushy and painerly was, which I LOVE.

I will hopefully finish this little floral tomorrow and share the result.

:)
