I know of a man, a great man, a man of honor, a man who staked his life for the freedom of his Natio - from Apartheid policy. His name is Nelson Mandela.

• Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918 in South Africa. He was a South African political leader, apartheid revolutionary and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. His government tackled the institutionalized racism and ensured racial reconciliation was restored.

• Nelson Mandela who was imprisoned for 27 years was later released in 1990 by President F. Klerk due to the fear of racial civil war. They both negotiated an end to apartheid and organized the 1994 multiracial general election where Mandela triumphed and became the President.

• He died on 5 December 2013 at the age of 95 after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection. 10 days was proclaimed as a national mourning which served as a memorial service held at Johannesburg. His country has huge respect for him and often refer him as the "father of the Nation".
