Magicians and wizardssteemCreated with Sketch.

Most of us have probably seen a magician perform his tricks on stage or maybe even experienced a street magician's show in some busy alleyway. From levitation to making Hummers disappear, some thicks are amazing to watch to say the least, but why do we watch them? Is it because we believe they are genuine? Because I don't know of any sane person who would tell me that he or she believes David Blaine has magical powers matching those of Gandalf the Grey or that Derren Brown has the power of controlling peoples minds like Professor Xavier from the X-Men. And yet many of us still watch — anticipating, waiting for that very moment, when something amazing, something extraordinary will happen.

There are many stages where magic happens everyday, not just those with top-hats and rabbits, but also those with fortunetelling and lottery tickets and slot machines. And though all of them can be explained away to nothing but coincidences and statistics, they still give some people hope that there is a better tomorrow just around the corner. The problem is just, well, most of them  don't really work as promised. Because there are no wizards and there is no mind control and no crystal balls, that show the future. There is no real magic. And many of us are fine with that. Because being in love and hiking with friends and eating a nice dinner with someone you haven't seen for 10 years can be more than magical enough. But if we are OK with all these things not being magical, why then do we protect the sacred veil that makes art and creativity so magical? Do we really need to see art as a wonderland of free, formless expression where all our hope and dreams can come true? Or would it be enough to see creativity as something as emotionally connecting as hugging a loved one, or as sincere as a midnight telephone conversation with our best friend, or just as intimate as a diary that only we can really read? Because none of those need magic to be what they are. And I'm sure art and creativity are beautiful enough without us having to persuade ourselves into thinking there is magic going on when we paint a nice seascape or chisel away on a piece of marble. In the end it all depends on how we understand what the word magic means to us.
