Power Object - Original Oil Painting

in #art9 years ago

Art and life revolve around mythic narratives..

Heskin_ Power Object 2017.jpg
Painting by David Heskin, 2016

Here's a scene from the classic heroes journey in which our protagonist is returning from the underworld with a new power object with which to vanquish his demons. This is one of several paintings created from the same photo shoot, which illustrate other aspects of the journey in which the hero is learning to wield the sword. To be posted..

The original painting is now in the private collection of the figure model himself.

Very haunting! It has a kind of Sword in the stone and a Highlander kind of vibe :)

I like the suggestiveness of the image, few details.

Funny how many artists eventually lean in this direction in their later works. Either from going blind or getting more expressive. It tormented me to leave it as it is for a short time, until I realized that to touch it any more would be to overwork it..
My recent quote is:
"Less is not more, less is less, and sometimes that's better"

More or less so. ;-)

Eventually lean in that direction? You are discounting the likes of greats such as Delacroix, Rembrandt, Sargent and Velázquez for whom it certainly wasn't a later development.

Your quote might be worth stealing. 3:)

Without discounting anyone's stylistic approach to painting, I highly appreciate seeing a distinct evolution over time of say, Titian. The difference between the earlier masterworks at the National Gallery in London versus the older works at the Vienna Kunsthistoriches particularly intrigues me.
Rembrandt definitely loosened up in time as well..
Not that one has to be in their later years to do so..it is an evolution from following the rules toward pushing the envelope!
Sargent didn't begin by painting portraits in 5 brushstrokes, either ;)

While it may have taken time for the artists to develop the looseness, it is not necessarily the preserve of old age. We only have to look to the Japanese, who made an artform out sparseness and looseness of burshstroke.

Either way, I believe we are on the same page, or canvas. The important poin is, it's fun. =)
