A dark fairytale about a young girl trapped in night

Hello Steemians! Here’s a glimpse into the project nearest and dearest to my heart: EATEN VOICES (with pics by my dear friend Issa Luckett). As I get to know the platform, I’m going to be sharing some of the pictures and links to my past work.

EATEN VOICES is a play about Leona, a plucky young woman, who is trapped in night, and being followed by unknown demons. She meets a child, a child who knows nothing, and decides that (s)he must be the Moon’s Child. Together, they travel through the land of night, heading towards day. They meet strange characters and guides along the way including a moth who draws them towards the light.

The world is filled with tricks and traps. A Raven makes mischief and tempts Leona from her path. A Bog Witch calls a great storm filled with spirits to hold back the travelers. In the midst of the storm, Leona remembers what happened in day that made her retreat into night. We begin to realize that the night is her subconscious mind--a place she has hidden herself because she cannot face her reality--a man who terrifies her and unknown abuse that we can only guess at.

Even as she breaks, she heals with the help of her friends. Leona manages to pick herself back up, find her courage, and face her demons as she goes back into day. EATEN VOICES is a lyrical tale that empowers survivors of abuse to face their inner darkness and find a path to their own light.

The brainchild of New York playwright Lavinia Roberts, Los Angeles composer Ahmed Alabaca, and Seattle director Lily Raabe, EATEN VOICES won “Best Play in Festival” at New York’s Thespis Theatre Festival in 2012 for its World Premiere. Since its first production the play has gone on to be performed at Dixon Place (NYC), Goblin Baby Theatre Company (London, UK), and the Arts in Nature Festival (Seattle, WA).
