To Cross or to Press, That is the Question.

Press the thumbs
34 x 24cm pencil on paper

When we are immersed in our own cultural milieu, we hardly ever pause to question certain little habits, let alone consider how it might be in other cultures. The English speaking world crosses their fingers, in Germany, Poland, Sweden and other parts of Europe, they press the thumbs (actually thumbs in the fist) to wish good luck.

I do both! Why limit yourself? =)

Further research indicated that crossing the fingers evolved from making a sign of the cross with two hands, and then simplified to one hand, to ward off evil. Where as, pressing or squeezing the thumbs has its roots in the Roman gladiatorial arenas. Think of all of those films with the thumb up or down to determine the fate of the downed gladiator. Well, it's inaccurate. Thumb in the fist meant, sheath the sword, the gladiator lives to fight another day (lucky?) or thumb out, draw the sword and finish him off.

So be mindful what you do with your fingers!
