RE: The Benefits of The Zorn Palette

in #art7 years ago

A limited palette can be powerful and very expressive. My own journey down this road began when I read about an article about the exhibition centred around Odd Nerdrum and his students / followers, called "The Temple of Apelles." This article mentioned the ancient Greet painter Apelles. I then discovered the long lineage of influence this has had. Certainly there would have been adherents who were just hacks who follow tradition for the sake of tradition, but I believe those shining stars, the Masters , proved to us time and time again how truly versatile limited palettes are.

As the saying goes, less is more.

I think you hit the nail right on the head with that one man. Whether you're attempting to follow a pathway of painting like Nerdrum did or using a limited palette, I can see how it can end up as a prison or a doorway that is dependent on how we define our goals and challenges we want to overcome.

Dogmatic people can be found in all walks of life, painting, science, politics, region... the list goes on. The truly inspired take from what was, but build upon it. The point is not to slavishly copy, but to innovate, otherwise, we never progress and learn.
