Reverie Delirium, Sandman by Nen Chang

Nen Chang is a female artist working in comics which is actually quite rare. Chang's work began to show up online when trading hands among art dealers very early in 2017 and it is the first I have seen of her. Chang's website indicates that she is an artist first, who tends to dabble in comic book art from time to time. So the first Chang piece I will share is quite impressive and according to her posts, this piece recently sold for $9000.00.

Apparently the piece took about 200 hours to complete and Chang speeds up the time lapse several hundred times in the following video so you can get a feel for the technique and work that went into this.

Lungshot: Jessica Jones #3 Variant by Nen Chang

Nen Chang's online presence has been very active early in 2017 showing me all sorts of art I never knew existed. Here we see Jessica Jones stuck full of arrows, including one straight through the throat. It kinda bums me out to see her in this condition. That irritable smirk she usually wears has transformed into anger. The fire behind her blazes as smoke appears to roll out from her wounds. Were those arrows on fire?

Chosen Undead Dark Souls Exclusive Cover by Nen Chang

This is a Chang cover for the Dark Souls comic book published by Titan. A gathering of young girls look to be experimenting with some sort of witch craft as they burn human skulls in the fire. To their surprise, they end up summoning a knight in armor from the flame. Their hair rises with magic energy which leads the viewers eye into the trees of the mysterious forest in the background.

This piece carries another incredible color palette and composition to help immerse the viewer. Chang may not be a huge fan of comics, but she certainly has what it takes to tell a story in a single image.

Blood Stutter: Dishonored #4 Variant

Another amazing piece posted by Nen Chang in early 2017. This painting has gone through a lot of interesting treatment to achieve such feelings of age and movement. The color palette is dynamic with red, black, and white but appears more mature when combined with the soft yellows and cremes. The roses drip into blood stains and spatters giving us a strong indication that there has been some violence here. An unusual but compelling composition creates a dreamy effect that ties everything together for a really fantastic cover.

Darkchylde The Legacy Cover by Jae Lee

Another amazing cover from Jae Lee trades hands this week depicting Ariel from Darkchylde. The story of a young girl who is not only the source of the problem her small town faces, but also the solution. Lee is always able to cast an emotional lime light on to every scene. Here the background is very dark, highly contrasting with the foreground which is lit up so heavily there is barely a shadow anywhere on Ariel.

The dark background helps to create a very nice composition that keeps my eye looking at Ariel over and over again. Her wings, the tree, and the grass in the background masterfully lead the viewer right back to Ariel once again.

The white sprays of ink around her wings are so thin, it looks like fog. The entire piece is very minimalist and rather amazing.

Zombie Tramp by Art Adams

The owner of this piece claims to have attained it from Arthur himself on Jan. 8th 2017 at the Wizard World New Orleans convention. Artists can be commissioned directly at these shows which is likely an expensive opportunity. But if you have the cash, it can be well worth it.

The Zombie Tramp below is depicted in a flirty posture and facial expression. Her eyes are hollow, filled all white, and a tiny bit of skin has peeled off her face in a heart shape... Just for you! A wonderful blend of cute, and disgusting.

We can tell it is original because we can see the pencil strokes underneath still showing through.

Sort:

Such a cute Zombie Tramp by Art. Love his stuff. Great post, great art. The Delirium is worth every penny, so beautiful.

Yep, so good I had to share. Chang really blew me away as her art has been generating lots of traffic lately. I have never heard of her before, but I absolutely love it. If you can hear us Chang... DON'T STOP GIRL!

I don't recall seeing Chang's work either, but it's great. She makes me think of a lot of great illustrators who work in multiple fields but have graced comic covers in recent years, such as James Jean or particularly Yuko Shimizu. (below from Unwritten #43)
