(De) Facing PTSD
Combat PTSD is very real, and is indeed an injury of war. I have admired this work for a while now and having seen the effects in friends, family and service men and women that I have met and worked with, this artwork seeks to depict and "unmask" the pain.
"The piece plays off of the emotional toll PTSD has, and how many in uniform wear a mask to shield their feelings, and hide their vulnerability. The piece is painted up in watercolor, and took about 150 hrs to complete. The military doesn’t seem to recognize PTSD as an injury of war, and for those who suffer, asking for help is like speaking a foreign language. The name tag on the soldier is ‘Ayudar’ which means ‘to help’ in spanish, and like the ”help” soldiers get these days, ‘Ayudar’ is hidden in the shadows. " Danny Quirk - Published: March 16, 2014
