Let's Look @ Superior Lego Sculptures; Entry #2--Acorn & Rose

in #art8 years ago

This is a sprouting acorn. There really wasn't much special about this piece...comparatively speaking it was one of the less flashy of the exhibit...however, the craftsmanship is still admirable and I have no doubt it is an absolute exercise in patience. It's difficult to see in the pictures, but there is quite a bit of weight resting on the lower elbow of the rising sapling. It must have been difficult to assemble and keep in place without tilting over.

The Bumble Bee in the first entry took just over 16,000 Lego blocks...this sculpture took just over 15,500 to put together and bring to life. Oddly enough, I don't recall these "kits" being sold on the Lego aisle at the local Wal-Mart or hobby store. Kinda makes you wonder where they go to get all those green Lego blocks...do they have to buy regular sets and discard the ones not in use...how come they don't sell these "kits" to the average Joe...does the Lego company think most of us are too dumb to compete in a Lego sculpture contest...what's the real story...I don't know, but I'll bet it's far more interesting than the Presidential election...

The Rose Sculpture is an absolute masterpiece. This thing took over 40,000 Lego blocks to complete. As you can see in the photo, this sculpture did require additional support to keep it from tipping over. The majority of the blocks, and therefor the weight of the piece, rest in the bulb of the Rose itself.

I took three different pictures of this Rose to try and capture the many facets of the flower itself. If it doesn't translate well in the photo, this thing stood a little taller than me and I am 6' all day, every day.

This entire exhibit was staged as a Treasure Hunt complete with scouting map. Despite this assistance, I found a few of these sculptures very well camouflaged...so much so it took me a minute to find them. They had a nice way of tucking them just off the trail among the trees, bushes, and shrubs.

The Rose Flower itself was a massive conglomeration of Lego blocks that were twice the size of a basketball, if not bigger. I'm thinking of building a sand castle out of Lego blocks down at the beach next summer...so we'll see how that goes...LOL
