Santo Toribio de Liébana
The North has always exercised a special fascination in men. For its exuberant magnificence, its inaccessible mountains, usually covered by dark clouds, similar, metaphorically speaking, to those dark swallows that the poet sang; the mysterious thicket of its forests, ancestrally inhabited by a multitude of fantastic and imaginary creatures; its little villages, hanging like fireflies from the slopes of the mountains, their spirit, ancestral and unalterable throughout the centuries; In short, his Natural Magic.
To this last nature belong, without a doubt, those impassive sleeping giants, which are the Picos de Europa.
And within his heart, places of special relevance, centers of spirituality and culture disseminated by a region without doubt endearing as is the Liébana.
To her belongs, like a genuine Grail, this singular monastery, which began calling itself San Martin de Turieno and changed its name to Santo Toribio, that monk of inflexible convictions that bequeathed to us one of the few and marvelous works that are conserved the epoch, dedicated to the Apocalypse of San Juan: the Beatus of Liébana.
A place, nestled in the Jacobean Way, which also has its Puerta del Perdón, which only opens ceremoniously in the Jubilee Years; his fragment of the True Cross or Lignum Crucis and the presence, as a decorative motif on one of the capitals of the main door, of an old and well-known termestino myth: the treacherous snake Elpha that, in these parts, could be associated with the traditional Cuélebre .
A place for and for the Spirit.
Information note: 2017 was the Jubilee Year -Annus Lebanensis- and the monastery of Santo Toribio, not only opened its Puerta del Perdón for everyone, but also the fragment of the Lignum Crucis or Vera Cruz was shown live -possibly, the greater size or one of the largest, of Christianity-officiating mass with him and allowing himself to be kissed by the assistants.
