Art, Travel and Culture: Burgos, the medieval necropolis of Revenga

What we are and where we come from, are existentialist questions that invite multiple and varied speculations, depending on the degree of formation and the spiritual beliefs of each one.

But of what there is no doubt, no matter how much anguish and uncertainty we may recognize, it is the fate that awaits us and the place where we will sooner or later come to, until we become that dust that we really are.

This impressive medieval necropolis, excavated in the rock and located in the leafy region of Arlanza Burgos -very close to the border with Soria and a few kilometers from where the source of the river or vital artery that bears his name is located and on whose side they settled important monasteries, like that of San Pedro, close to the mythical and romancera Covarrubias of count Fernán González and to Santo Domingo de Silos- offers us, as soon as one begins to walk among its many and varied anthropomorphic tombs, a genuine panorama of that dark side of life, which induces us to meditate on the uncertain rotations that the Wheel of Fortune exerts on a world that we supposedly believe to dominate.

Located in a natural setting, truly splendid, although, certainly very touched at present by the hand of man, the necropolis of Revenga causes a bleak impression to observe, above all, those small, tiny tombs that once contained the little bodies of infants who did not even have time and opportunity to live.

And if they had, they would have been part of that legion of fearful specters, who lived hidden in the most leafy forest - and believe it, in this area, there are still places where the rays of the sun can hardly reach - badly nourished with the scarce resources at their disposal, with the wrath of God falling on their heads and trying to avoid the constant raids or expeditions of looting and punishment carried out by the Muslims, where many of them ended their days as slaves in the Cordovan caliphate.

Now, a millennium later, it is paradoxical to observe that just twenty meters away, and also under the rocks, there are playgrounds, with slides and swings and something beyond, next to a very reformed ermituca, whose original design, probably Romanesque or pre-Romanesque, there is only the possible presumption, a splendid restaurant, where families who come to the place to spend the weekend, have all the provisioning there and for having.

Sun and shadow, in short, of those eternal scoffers accompanying life, which are luck and destiny.
