- What is art?
a. Define: Message
b. Meaning: Anything that encourages thought or discussion
c. Critical approval is important, because it is what galleries listen to and what will
inherently place and artist in history
i. Critics are out there to help separate art that is superficial and art that is
impactful - Quality Art through trials and tribulations
a. Best art comes from the turbulence of life.
i. Difficulty invokes strong emotions, because it is further from societal
standards
ii. Most famous art comes from the pain of the artist - Examples: Pollack,
iii. The term “idealized” in the art community is used to specifically criticize
art for abiding too much by society’s standard of perfection - Common argument for this criticism is that these art works
- Critical Art is more impactful
a. Message
i. Political - Political cartoons
a. - Hippie Music (Bob Dylan)
ii. Social - Uncle Tom’s Cabin
- Turner’s Slave Ship
iii. Story-telling - Religious
- Historical
b. Critical Art affects more people for a longer time
i. Critical Art is capable to be analyzed - This means that this art will remain in galleries and collections to
be analyzed in the future - Commercially Successful Art clouds the art community
a. Viewership of art is limited and case construct clearly defines Commercially
successful artist as having a wider distribution
i. Less viewership for Critical art
ii. More viewership for superficial art
iii. Devalues the meaning of art
b. What are examples of these?
i. It is extremely difficult to create a good Horror Movie, because all the
money is going to these shitty sequel heavy horror movie; same can be
said for Transformers
ii. It is extremely difficult for musicians to convey meaningful messages - MIA - Paper planes, Flobots - Handlebars, Gungam Style
iii. Competition to get commercial success (Top 40 Charts) pushes
meaningful music aside - Only song people know from Fort Minor is Remember the Name,
not songs like Kenji; SOAD is known for BYOB and Chop Suey,
but not any other song conveying political messages; Even
Eminem remarks how any song he tries making a strong political
message is inherently not accepted by the commercial community
c. If an artist wishes to bring about change in society, said artist is hindered from
doing so because 1. Funding is going elsewhere 2. Viewership is split and 3. No
one actually will take the art seriously
Interesting analysis.
Art as a language is important and your right, if we are a species of addicts looking for quick emotional fixes, we will miss that which may be initially disturbing, in favour of that which provides the feeling we "need".
It is that disturbance though that challenges where we may of become inflexible.
Of course some disturbance is just noisy turbulence, but even then, one persons noise may be another persons doorway.
Both the market and the professional critics act as a filter.
With more decentralised platforms, complete anonymity and less ability to regulate content, perhaps new memes will emerge and we will see even more of what people are really feeling and not just what they feel comfortable sharing?
