Irony of Drawing

It is always ironic when a cute abstract character is depicted drawing a more realistic character. That's what I was trying to communicate in this artwork. It features the ONO mascot using his mouth to make a pencil sketch of my daughter. Perhaps it's just me, but I find it pleasingly ironic that a round character would create a more life-like portrait.

There are so many interesting and ironic thing about the act of drawing. For one, we artists can draw all we want and yet we will never be able to capture the full glory of real life. We still try though and succeed in varying and limited degrees. Sometimes we simply create a nice record of a specific moment in time through sketching. Sometimes we create an inspiring image of alternate realities. Other times we communicate a message or mood or memory.

Yet there’s just no substitute for the goodness of real life. That doesn’t mean artists should give up. It just means we need to know our place in the grand scheme of things. We do have a place, and it’s all under the ultimate creator, God!
