Disability Awareness Done Right

I just finished attending our church's Global Leadership Conference with an attendance of over 2,000 people. This included talented and hard-working folks coming literally from around the world. Everyone just sort of expects to be inspired, and this year's conference in Anaheim, California even exceeded expectations.

Among such countless and precious moments included a great milestone for disability awareness. Two missionaries from our International Christian Churches who had recently returned from the Middle East, RD and April Baker, did a fantastic job sharing a heartfelt lesson about why we must faithfully endure suffering as well as why Jesus endured suffering for us while being nailed to the cross. Figuratively speaking, these gifted missionaries "nailed" the topic of the cross from a powerful disability perspective, showing from their own lives how God uses hardship--even a lifelong disability--to refine us for greater things.

To view a recording of that lesson, go to https://livestream.com/accounts/6646219/events/8318274/videos/179129796 and skip to 48 minutes and 52 seconds into the video.

This eternal message came with an additional level of inspiration since the church also had sign language interpreters present to translate for an attendee who was hearing impaired. In fact, through a drawing that I sketched for the occasion, in the foreground can be seen a sign language interpreter starting to make the hand motions that signify an important word in American Sign Language, and an essential word in any language: prayer! Therefore, I pray that more people with disabilities around the globe become empowered for full inclusion, inspiration, and incredible opportunities in this life... and the life to come!
