It is amazing what cool effects you can get with some simple techniques. I really love to explore watercolor. The last tutorial was about the process - this one will focus more on some details. See part 1 (Art Tutorial #4) to get a better sens of this one.
When I wrote about painting wet-in-wet in the last part I ment to let the watercolor run on a wet watercolorpaper. This is a really hard but great technique. To get some more control and to build layers I mask some of my paintings - like this one. Here is an example of how I let the Ivory black pigment run freely and creating effects.
4. It is essential to know your colors to get the best results - some pigments are transparent and some opaque. I use the transparent ones most of the time to get the shine through effect shown below. Sometimes you let to different colors run into each other wet-in-wet but to get some effects you have to let the first color dry before moving on to the next one - it is shown here:
In this kind of painting you have to think ahead. There is a small acceptance for mistakes if you are quick - but most of the time you have to know what your plan is before you begin. And even then the watercolor will live its own life - it is the beauty of it - hard but very rewarding when the painting paints itself.
If the wet-in-wet part is done well the details is an easy process. But of course - it also take some effort to ge the details right.
