Inktober 2018 Day 18: “Bottle”

Everyone’s favorite rummy, this is the tale of Capt Jack Sparrow...

Copic sketch markers, Pentel brush pen, Copic 0.1 multi liner, Staedler 0.3 pigment liner, and Zebra ballpoint on watercolor paper:

The reference photo, run under the Drawing Grid app on my iPad:

First, I draw my own grid to scale:

Then, begin preliminary sketch:

Once I’m happy that everything is in basically the right place, I draw some light pen lines to mark major landmarks, and then I erase the grid lines:

Now we can start with the shading, concentrating on the lighter tones and heaviest blacks first so I can establish my lighting range:

Start to add some color and tighten up the details:

Now that the subject is mostly rendered, we can add a little background:

And now bring it all together:
