Big Or Small. Why The Size Of Your Art (instrument) Matters!
When I saw the probably most famous painting in the world in Louvre (yes Da Vinci's Mona Lisa of course), I was disappointed by two things.
Actually three. First was the amount of people crowded around it and pushing each other.
Second one was the fact that it was behind a protective glass (although I understand it).
And the third and most disappointing was.....the size.
Ladies get it right? Too small just doesn't work regardless the skill level!
With art it's very similar to "love" business (male side of it haha...), in my own humble opinion. Don't get me wrong, a cute little painting is like a cute little puppy. But I bet you will be more impressed by a galloping stallion or charging bear. Or a whale for the sake of comparison! :)
As far as I am concerned, the bigger the better. I LOVE PAINTING LARGE PAINTINGS. It's not easy because the larger you go the more difficult it gets in several ways.
First is the perspective. You have to step back to see what you're actually doing , taking into consideration the whole composition not only the small area that you're currently working on. With small painting you see it right in front of you. With an 8 x 6 painting you have to step back constantly.
Second is the practicality of the size- big canvas is harder to transport, store, and even sell because not everyone has space for an eight footer and also not everyone has enough money to buy a big piece (5 digits in case of my current pricelist, going into 6 soon). And obviously, if you're stretching and priming your canvases on your own, then good luck fella, you gotta have long and strong arms, cause it's no easy feat to pull it off. I dare say I'm pretty strong lad and even for me I get a serious workout out of it (see below priming process of an 8x6 feet canvas I built from scratch, including the frame myself).
- Thirdly, it's another workout to paint a large piece! Do you know how many brush strokes of a painting like this one below needs before it's finished? Thousands! Tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands. Explains why my shoulder is screwed haha :) Add to it constant climbing of stair to get to the top parts, and you don't need gym anymore :)
Of course there is many other reasons that I can't think of now, because my brain is fried after a very long day of all sorts of crypto operations:)
But.... AND THAT'S A SIGNIFICANT BUT....
would you rather be looking at something like this....
OR SOMETHING LIKE THIS??....
Yup, that's the same painting, once in 14 inch edition on the cover of New Agora magazine (thank you for the honor!) and the original 6 feet size!
I still paint small paintings, especially outside in summer, and also when I am too tired to paint a big one and I just need to relax with something easy. But if I can chose between small or large art, I'd go for large in any situation..
because....
size....
MATTERS! ....
What size of painting would you like to have in your house?
Or your future dreamed house?
I wanna paint 20 footers, that's clear!:-)
Thank you for reading, commenting, upvoting and all other kinds of love, even just a kind thought! :)
