This is my second digital drawing of "the black pearl".
The details and features are more refined. We will compare after the process!

Title: The black Pearl (2)
Tool: Autodesk Sketchbook and Stylus

Before drawing anything we must remember the following basics/ Applying the Elements of Art

(1-2) Lines and shapes
For the seaweed wavy lines and for the pearl a circle.

(3) Tonal Value and Gradation
This means the softness and the proper application of shading. Be cautious of the natural projection of light and reflection. This helps you achieve the 3D effects, portrayal of distance, depth and receding of the subject.
For traditional art based on my experience it is always a light to dark shading process.
For digital art I experienced much ease with the dark to light process since digital art imitates paint as a medium rather than pencil art so highlighting is much easier and produces a cleaner output. See also:
i. Tonal bars
ii. Volume
iii. Tonal gradation

(4) Color
Hue and color or The Color Theory is most important. Study this theory because it applies the logical use of color based on the color wheel and from nature. Examples are complimentary colors for example they are colors opposite to each other in the color wheel. They are contrasted beside each other. Like red and green, blue and orange and purple and yellow.
So with colors of the drawing, sand is orange and red hue and the water blue hues and green and violet. Yellow sunshine compliments the violet hues of the water so we see how these colors harmonize.

(5) Texture
Texture is basically drawing the roughness, smoothness and visual depth of a drawing. So techniques for drawing are needed such as (for traditional art) the strokes of shading like cross hatching or with paint, dabbing paint onto the canvas. For digital art it is mostly layering of colors.

Here is an image, I drew this to show the elements of art. I hope it is understandable.

Drawing the Black Pearl

Base color for the background (yellow, blue, purple green)

Then I sketch the seaweed and pearl with green. Both have green color.
As you can see, what I did next was color the pearl since i discovered that dark to light is an easier technique for me.

Here the pearl is all dark, adding shine and highlights will be much easier.
Screenshot_20171104-233156.png
Then darken it further
Screenshot_20171104-233935.png
The seaweed i used different shades of green, orange and brown.
Screenshot_20171104-234445.png
Dark color first then highlights and layover some midtones and highlight again.
But it is up to the artists technique, whatever is easier.
Screenshot_20171104-234605.pngScreenshot_20171104-235604.png
Then shading and highlighting the sand with white, then shadowing with brown and coloring with some yellow, orange, red and a little bit of bluegreen and green so the water reflections are seen.

Grey and black spray paint effect is good. Just put patches of dark leaving highlights to the side.
Screenshot_20171105-000936.png
Screenshot_20171105-001548.png
Next is coloring the background with green orange blue violet and black
Darken the area around the seaweed
Screenshot_20171105-002102.png
And highlight the sunlight rays using light yellow and then white.
And put patches of red, orange, green, blue, pink, violet.

Screenshot_20171105-003722.png
Screenshot_20171105-005938.png
The technique is using gray or dark blue and violet to sculpt the direction of the rays.
Then i used bluish grey and made streaks for sunbeams
Screenshot_20171105-141013.png
And observe the white dots i made on the pearl using eraser tool.
It emphasizes light and the reflection and the spherical shape.

Now compare with the first black pearl

The pearl, seaweed and sand are less defined.
I can see some improvement and hopefully if I can, ill practice more on the sand and seaweed.
Here's the comparison Pic.
