🎨 Watercolor and Acrylic on Watercolor paper

My first try on painting humpback whales. I enjoyed it! Glad to share the process on how I made it.

🐳 Title: Remember Davor?

Who is Davor? Davor is a sperm whale found beached in Mati City, Mindanao. It was a young whale, probably died of health problems. I remembered Davor when I was painting these Humpbacks.

📣 They actually migrate to Philippines seas and we ought to be extra careful and caring towards our oceans if we want to protect these awesome whales.

Medium, Size and Days (or hours) completed

🎨 This is watercolor on watercolor paper. I used acrylic white on some highlights.

🎨 Size is around 11 x 11"

🎨 It took me about 4 - 5 days (non consecutive) and around 2-3 hours per sitting. All in all, 8-15 hrs. I can't really remember. But that's it. 🤣

OKAYYYYY HERE WE GO!

🎨 PROCESS! Everyone knows I start with
(1) A sketch.
(2) Slightly erasing the sketch so it won't show when I paint over it.
(3) paint...
🎨 Painting

1. Base tone - yellow and sky blue hues usually.
2. Mid tone - natural to dark color hues to build volume and shape.
3. Inking for shadows.
4. Highlights last - opaque white mediums/paint.

💬 So here, you see how the sketch is super light and base paint is building up.

💬 I add colors like purple, pink, green. And so on.

💬 I add colors and details

💬 Background, I put different rays of shades of blue. I gradually darken and leave out white for light.

💬 Darker blues

💬There's lots of wiggly lines and I leave out white spaces as well.

💬 I put pink and yellow, and orange highlights. And finally some white acrylic dots and rays. Also I highlighted the whales.

I cropped and edited viginette effect on the feature photo.

I've been inspired lately to make a few marine life pieces. I've created FOUR! But this whale piece is only the third.
