Introduction to copic markers: kinds, paper, refilling, copic art examples and a speed-paint VLOG:)

in #art8 years ago

Copic are one of my favorites when it comes to sketching. Today in this post I want to tell a few about their kinds, how to take care of them and how to refill your markers.

Ability to refill is really a great feature. This medium is quite expensive, but since everything in the tool is replaceable in the final result they come out cheaper then other markers. Plus the manufacturer is Japan, and they always produce high quality art supplies.

This is the copic art drawing I created for @steempty. As you see one of the main advantages of the medium is brightness, colors are really clean and bright, and they can be easily blended.

There are four types of makers:

  • Classic copic
  • Copic Wide
  • Copic Sketch
  • Copic Ciao

Here on the photo I'm holding Copic Ciao (left one) and Copic Sketch (right one).

The only different between them is their size. While Copic Classic and Copic Wide have different Types of tips:

I prefer using Copic Sketch. Ability to buy an empty marker of any kind and an ink re filler gives an opportunity to create any kind of palette you like.

To draw with copics you need a special paper. The trick is - they have ink in their base, and if you use watercolor paper, for example, the paper will take too much ink inside and it will make your tools spoil quickly. So - special paper, for markers:

Re-fillings look like this. One re-fill is enough to update your marker up to 10 times:

So, how do you re-fill your marker?

Sometimes it's considered that you have to pull away the tip and put the ink directly in the whole from it. But I highly recommend to do it in other way, let me show you how:

Here I have a marker that needs re-filling, and the ink, of the same color. I take off all two caps, and use a napkin to protect my table:

Then I start putting drops of ink from the re-filler directly on the tip:

And from the other side:

You're done when both tips reach bright color. Avoid putting too much ink, better refill again when needed, cause otherwise you can start receiving blots on the drawing, really hard to take away.

One more thing I have to mention in this review. Copic palette includes a colorless blender, №0:

It's not really good for blending, it "eats" a lot of color, but it's completely fine for erasing small mistakes. Only you have to act not as with eraser, but try to put the ink back to borders with pushing moves in one direction.

Seems like this posr already becomes too big, and I yet have so much to tell about these wonderful tolls:) So I will stop at this point, and will add here my original copic art speedpaint as a bonus:)

Thank you for your attention, next copic tips and tricks review will be coming soon:)

Thank u so much for sharing! I've been looking into Copic markers and this was super super helpful!!

Happy to hear it:) Later I'll make more posts with different copic tricks:)

Your tutorial id very usefull, I didn't know there were other type of Copics aside Sketch and Ciao. And I always wondered how I could refil a Copic marker.
Do you think I can refill also other brands of markers?

Not sure, but no one can stop you from trying:)

Nice to know. I've never tried using Copic markers, but looks like they would be great fun to use. I shall have to experiment. Thanks for introducing a new medium.

Always welcome:)

I don't have copic markers... why I don't have them?... I have to have them!!! :D Thanks so much for this post, @inber , now I know what's my next purchase ^_^

You'll love them:) Really much fun:)

great work @inber upvoted

@inber - I could not make out the difference in brightness of colors in the photos but I like the idea of being able to blend colors in a simple pen form based application. I am not sure if the Copic set is available in my location. Will find out tomorrow. The drawing of flower from Karenb's garden is very good. Thanks for sharing. Upvoted.

I request you to visit my latest blogs when you have some free time. You valuable comments and feedback will be very much appreciated. Thanks

Hehe. Love this little gremlin from the last video :)
