BRIGHTON RESIDENCE - HOUSE DESIGN

in #art8 years ago

Hi guys, please see my design I completed for an amazing client. The client wanted a ultra modern and very simple house that would also take on the history of the city where they came from, Rome. The clients were excited with the design and were very happy, which is of utmost importance.

The site is located in Sydney on a narrow property with a pedestrian lane-way to the north. The building was composed with ideas inspired by Roman domestic architecture. This typology was well-known to the Roman people and was extensively written on by an ancient architectural writer 'Vitruvius'. Three important points spoken about were functionality, firmness (structurally stable) and beauty. It was by no means to copy the roman house, but to interpret the history and continue it with consideration to locality, climate, and client necessity to inhabit a house that connects with their heritage.

The house takes the form of simple proportioned 4m by 8m volumes arranged around a central atrium which has been set out on a precise total building footprint of 9m by 24m. Each volume contains living and necessary functions of the house, where each space is located accordingly. The atrium serving as a focal point of the plan.

Upon entry there is a narrow corridor of light provided by the gaps between the main volumes that speak with the street. The central atrium roof opening (compluvium) allows water to fall to a corresponding pool of water (impluvium). Both are a necessity for natural light, wind and a natural cooling effect controlled through an operable glass louvre system surrounding the impluvium. Additionally this idea provides excess water to be used for services and use in the gardens.

The beauty is further enhanced by a pool to the north of the buildings edge. For functionality and solar access, living spaces are placed to the north and services to the south. Bridge links surrounding the atrium connect the four volumes above, where sleeping, resting and learning will take place for years to come.

I am really happy to see more original content under #archtiecture tag!

I wonder how did you deal with overheating? Are those retractable sunshades?

There is minimal glazing to the north and west on first floor. The skylight glazing between the main volumes is performance glazing with 2 layers of glass about 270 mm apart to provide an air gap which captures heat and releases it via vent up high (trombe wall). Yes there is also adjustable external shutters to north east and west. West is a big issue as it penetrates at low angle. There is actually alot of large trees that provide filtered light on the west at low angle as a bonus. The central atrium will provide cross ventilation throughout. It can get to over 45 degrees, so you could not do it without performance glazing or shading devices. Thanks for your comment.

Oh I forgot it is southern hemisphere actually. Long time northern hemisphere user here :D
Nice to see in depth analysis of this problem

Ahaha yes :) Sorry for the extremely small north point on the plans. Thanks for your comments, I have followed you :)

Thanks. I appreciate your comment :)
