Steemit Art Lesson - How to Paint in Oils! - step by step process

in #art7 years ago (edited)

Hi steemians, today I am sharing with you my process in painting with oils for the first time! It took me 3-4 hours complete and you can follow along the steps.

General outline

Simple pencil outline for the mug. You want to get your background color in around the object. I went for a dark and slightly lighter green here. This allows you to get the right values and tones in your main focal object as you are comparing them to surrounding colors and not the white background.

Adding black to the darkest areas.

You want to be careful when using black in painting it can destroy realism. Here I only used it slightly in the background, as shadows and some parts on the edges of the object.

Finishing most of the mug - lighter towards the middle and adding highlights

You want to avoid blending colors together as it can get messy. Add the basic tones to the painting but don't mix them.

Then add some red to desaturate the green a little

The good thing about oils is that they take longer to dry compared to acrylics. You can place a color and blend it nicely with other tones behind or around it. At this point I blended the colors a little and created a texture on the mug.

Adding the highlights

As you can see I used white for the highlights on the mug. It looks to strong so I could easily blend it in with the other colors and make it less noticeable. I also added more to the background.

Finishing parts...

Again, a wonderful lesson. I love these as I like to stop and feel the nostalgia of art school. I can smell the turpentine and hear the low rumble of hushed voices and see the circle of easels. There is something about the smell and sound of the real studio. Thank you for these lessons for many reason. :)

No problem I enjoy the learning process myself. :)

We should never stop learning, I think. I also love how our digital connectivity can allow for us to just 'drop in' on an art lesson such as this whenever we like!

Very nice illustration.each and every point clearly explained.well i am also interested in learning this can u suggest how to start with.

Regards @crafter

Make sure you have the basic equipment like oils, canvas and easel makes it easier to paint on. I used green, some yellow, red, black and white. The video link I put has a lot of detail to help get started.

Great lesson, I enjoy seeing other artists teaching on Steemit as well.
