Hyperrealism And My Attempt With Mixing Mediums

The Benefits

For this portrait drawing, my goal was to create the challenge of receiving different textures through the use of both pen and charcoal. By this, I can create a differentiation between the skin, hair, and material of his clothing. The pen, being a stiff material allows me to create illusion of each individual hair coming together. The line work remains strongly upon the paper, unable to smudge making it a great material to create the hair illusion.

As for the skin, I used multiple charcoal pencils, which unlike the pen, allows me to evenly apply a smooth amount of darkness creating an illusion of light hitting the skins surface. Charcoal also allows for a darker tone apposed to graphite, which creates a metallic texture when pressed to strongly against the papers surface.

The Negatives
The main problems with mixing, really becomes apparent when displaying the artwork. The light shines against the paper, which makes the pen reflexive. When it is on the correct angle, its fine, however sometimes the elements surrounding the work are uncontrollable to the artist.

The Other issue, comes when blending the two materials together. On areas such as the eye brows, I had to combine the both as the eyebrow became to reflective with just pen.
