“His Three Masters” : Pen & Ink Drawing Series (Part 3)
Ego [noun] the part of the mind that mediates between the conscious and the unconscious and is responsible for reality testing and a sense of personal identity.
Here is a time lapse (below) of Kirk at work on an earlier "Id" drawing. In this "Ego" drawing series, we extracted new themes and pursued our canvases individually, rather than all together on the same page. As we developed this back-and-forth exercise, the four of us uncovered new patterns and new identities to play with on paper. (For more on our collaborative artworks, click here!)
Drawing the Ego : One Artist, One Sheet of Paper
The “Ego” is the continuation of our collective “Id” series. Each of the four hands from the previous collaborative drawing project was given it’s own template to experiment within, allowing a sole individual to design the entire composition and explore their own reflections based on the previous collaborative drawings.
All four of us worked to excavate visual themes which were embedded in the past “Id” drawings. As a result, we completed four distinct Egos on paper, organizing themselves to discover a new context, a new form to inhabit, and an individual presence on paper.
In this drawing, Kirk drafted hatch patterns in layers of curves and straight lines. Each circle shape was built of only curved lines while each square shape was built of straight lines. A repetitious process produced a layering of three versions of the same drawing at multiple scales. Below, you can see how the family shapes are visible from different perspectives.
