“In the Greek underworld many rivers have flowed. One of them had seen the light of the sun before disappearing into the realm of the dead: perhaps the poets of the myths suspected that water hollows mountains.

The Acheron flowed through Epirus and an oracle of Death kept watch on the banks.

In the depths of the earth, Acheron became the river of grief and misery over which Charon took the dead on his ferryboat.

There was the burning Pyriflegeton, the lava stream, and the pity stream Cocytus, an arm of the ice cold Styx.

There was also the Lethe, the river of oblivion, but also the Hydor Mnemosyne whose water returned memories, also the ones that you would rather forget.”
