Love Won Love Lost

What:
An Austin, TX area film maker contracted me late last year to create a series of illustrations for his short film about an underground pinata fighting ring. The concept was absurd, but his enthusiasm and commitment to delivering a straight-faced mockumentary-styled film exploring the characters who take this silly sport so very seriously - well, that is what drew me in. I've seen the film several times now, and it gets funnier with every viewing.
This image was just recently commissioned to squeeze into the film as a point of "historical fact" to back up the theories and history of the Pinateros. Pinatas, it seems, are even more ancient than previously thought, and back then the consequences of winning or losing were far greater.

Who:
Rey Barreras is the film maker, and my friend. He has submitted the short film to a few film contests and we have had one showing so far. I would love to see this thing take off, and to see Rey be able to turn it into a full-length film. That would be amazing.

How:
Rey specified he wanted a loose, sketchy style. We went through a few rounds of sketches and photoshopping ideas until we settled on a new style I had never used before. It's somewhat comic book, and somewhat sketch book, with a washed out photoshop coloring effect. I used a few tricks and some texture overlays to achieve most of it.
The story of the image is a classic tale of love won and love lost. One warrior will win her heart, the other will lose his life. She loves them both, but only one will survive - and it's all her fault. Happy Valentine's Day!
