I created this image in about 7 hours using Cinema 4D and Photoshop, using a simple technique of rendering out spline wrapped geometry in Cinema 4D and using them as a library to create the composition in Photoshop.

I have also captured the creation process in real time and you can watch it sped up into 9 minutes below:
