Buenos Aires- La Ciudad Hermosa/ Brazilian defender is killed in Brazil and honored in Buenos Aires

Marielle Franco 'wins' street signs and subway stations in Buenos Aires. The plaques are part of an initiative of Brazilian and Argentine collectives and NGOs focused on issues related to human rights.

Marielle Francisco da Silva, known as Marielle Franco was a sociologist, politician, feminist and defender of Brazilian human rights. Member of the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL), she was elected councilor of Rio de Janeiro for the 2017-2020 Legislature, during the municipal election of 2016, with the fifth greater vote. Criticism of the federal intervention in Rio de Janeiro and the Military Police, constantly denounced abuses of authority by police officers against residents of poor communities. On March 14, 2018, she was shot dead by her driver, Anderson Pedro Mathias Gomes, in Estácio, Central Region of Rio de Janeiro.

Marielle Franco was the daughter of Marinete Francisco and Antonio da Silva Neto. With Catholic creation, was born and raised in a favela of Complexo da Maré, in the suburb of Rio de Janeiro, and proudly presented himself as "the creature of Maré." In 1990, to the 11 years of age, began to work with the parents like camelô, gathering money to help to pay its studies. At the age of eighteen, she left the job as a street vendor and started working as a child care educator in a nursery where she stayed for two years. In adolescence, from 14 to 17, was dancer of the team of funk Hurricane 2000.

Franco was executed with three shots in the head and one in the neck, at around 9.30pm on March 14, 2018, when Anderson Pedro Mathias Gomes, the driver of the vehicle in which the councilwoman was found, was also murdered. The main line of investigation by the competent authorities is that their murder was an execution although they do not rule out other possible grounds. However, according to investigations regarding the direction of the shots and the fact that there is another car giving possible coverage to the shooters, the hypothesis of a premeditated crime is strengthened. According to Human Rights Watch, her murder related to "impunity in Rio de Janeiro" and to the "bankrupt security system" of the state.
