La Chinigua
The Chinigua appears at night to the fishermen and when they, captivated by their beautiful smile, try to embrace it or take off the mantle, they find that underneath it, there is only a lot of bones that when it clashes produces a macabre sound , while La Chinigua lets out a laugh.
The legend says that this phantom punishes fishermen who do not care for marine fauna, or fish indiscriminately, depopulating the ocean and damaging the species of fish and shellfish; those who pollute the waters of the sea, and also those who disrespect the Virgin of the Valley. However, sometimes, La Chinigua has fun scaring good people, men and women who do not hurt anyone.
That was the case of Chuíto, a robust and kind fisherman from the beautiful town of Laguna De Raya, in Margarita, who one night was sitting near his house, trying to catch catfish. Suddenly he began to feel a supernatural fear: his skin became a chicken and his hair began to stand up, while strange chills of terror ran through his body. The fisherman sensed the spectral presence of La Chinigua and resolved to get out of there immediately, leaving fishing for catfish to a better occasion.
To chase La Chinigua you have to cross yourself and pray the Creed, the prayer par excellence to instill fear in ghosts. Because if he is insulted or cursed, he persecutes and torments his offender forever.
