Michelangelo's "David" - the marble statue strikes with its details

One of Michelangelo's most famous works is undoubtedly the statue of David. The majesty and beauty strikes everyone who has seen the statue closely. Still, because of the scale of this magnificent work, even close to it, we would not have noticed the details that can only capture the sensitive eye of the camera.

David's statue is made of a whole piece of marble that was delivered from Carrara, Italy. Michelangelo Buonarroti was only 26 when he received the order. The sculptor took up work on 13 September 1501 and worked almost continuously for two years.

The body expresses calm and confidence

From the beginning, the question arises as to where to place such a spectacular creature. Initially, the guarantors had the idea of the statue towering near the Santa Maria del Fiore Temple, but then the consultants, including Leonardo da Vinci himself, decided to be the Lancy Lodges, where they met the city council. At his current location, at the Academy of Fine Arts, David was transferred in 1873.

What first strikes the Academy's visitors is the size of the statue - it is 5.17 meters high and weighs 5660 kilograms. Michelangelo portrays David a moment before the Goliath fight.
David seems calm and focused. Usually it was depicted after the fight with the giant, not before it. Obviously, Michelangelo's approach expresses his confidence in the power of the Good, and inspires the faith that every man must have before a decisive battle in his life.
